COLUMBUS QUILT SHOW

These were some of my favorite quilts at the National Quilt Show, which I was able to attend in Columbus. There were many gorgeous traditional quilts but these caught my eye.

I also watched an enormous Gay Pride parade, simultaneously watching city workers trying to obliterate painted swastikas from the sidewalks.
I saw THE WIZARD OF OZ on a big screen at a fantastic vintage theater (The Ohio), visited the Warren G. Harding and James Thurber Houses, visited the art museum, a topiary modeled on SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, and met the fabulous Naomi Johnson. I am ticking you people off one by one. No one will escape my stretch and only death will deter me.

My one grievance-how can I travel without packing? When I add up the time spent packing and unpacking, figuring out what to take, where to put it, what suitcases to use, it's nuts.
Do you dread packing as much as I do? Do any of you men pack for yourself. I have been persuaded that it's my womanly duty.

First, the quilts. Niiiice. As you may remember Wife makes quilts, and we visit quilt shops and a few quilt shows annually. The upper left quilt is a fairly popular pattern and has been the subject of classes. I've seen several similar ones. The next to the left is probably my favorite. Those thin curved pieces are a darn sight harder to do than they look. Glad you go to the show, it's a biggie.

Gay Pride and swastikas are not a good match. I'm a little confused. Were there white supremacists on the sidewalks?

I'd like to see Thurber house some day, what's it like?

Packing: nah, no problem. Throw a few things in a duffel and take off. Check it if flying, take the camera, book and snack in the carry-on. Done.

Yes, I pack for myself, but then my wardrobe (such as it is) is rather limited so it's usually pretty easy. The only problem is remembering to bring all the pills.

Yes I did remember you showing us some of Barbara's quilts a while back, Rick. The Thurber House was very ordinary but they had a lot of his cartoons around. And signed autographed photos of many writers.
The Harding house even had their clothes in the drawers. I never saw any house more authentic in my life. 95% of it was their belongings.
I think I am now awful at decision making. These shoes or those. Umbrella, what coat will be the right one, what books. On and on.

Sounds like a gas, gas, gas. The quilts are colorful cool. Thurber and Harding! Nifty-fifty~~!

Packing: I always pack my own stuff, are you kidding? Bring half the stuff and twice the money -- when and if possible. If flying, I'll mail stuff or pre-position it and take only a carry-on with a laptop. If driving, more, including a thermos of coffee and a sack full of jokes ;->

Those quilts are wonderful. I like the entire top row, and the one on the bottom right I like because it reminds me of a piece of Chihuly glass sculpture. The top center one is my favorite.

Sorry, I'm rotten at packing. I just try to go for items that don't wrinkle and as few shoes as possible.

Sounds like a great trip! I know your question was for the guys, but...my husband packs for himself. The only thing I try to double check is, as Jeff said, the pills. I take half the house and most of my books, he takes a tiny bag and a map or two.

I will post a few more.
I guess I didn't train Phil correctly. Except I did get him to cook!

Lovely quilts. My mother-in-law is a quilter, so I know how challenging those patterns are.

As for packing, I've packed for so many hurricane evacuations, I could do it in my sleep by now. I pack for myself; my husband packs for himself; and, now that our kids are older, all I do is give them the number of days and the type of events we'll be attending, and they pack for themselves.

Best advice: Toiletries for the entire family must go into ziploc baggies and be placed in one suitcase specifically for that purpose--I've had to fish clothes out of a suitcase when a bottle of hair condition popped open in transit. Yuck!

The one thing I dislike about packing is the packing to come back home. All of the clothes are now dirty, but to make them fit in the suitcases, you still have to fold them neatly.

Patti - Those quilts are gorgeous!! And it's funny you'd mention packing. My husband always, always packs for himself. I've never packed his stuff.

Those quilts are great. Especially the second from the right.

Usually we pack for ourselves, but once in a while I decide we only need one suitcase and when that happens, it always falls to me to pack it.
