Tuesday Night Music: Johnny Cash

I wanted to post a video that used this fantastic song by Johnny Cash to accompany scenes from Tod Browning's movie, FREAKS. In it, you can get a glimpse of Pip and Flip, the sideshow twins Reginald Marsh featured in one of his pictures. But you tube wants you to come there.

So if you want to see them in painful action, go there. I was going to base my flash on that one, but I just can't wrap my head around using those poor girls again.

Patti - I have to admit I'm not the biggest of Johnny Cash fans. But I acknowledge his influence in the music world, and that song is a fit to the movie...

The movie was on TCM last night and I taped it but I don't know if I have the nerve to watch it again. It feels so voyeuristic.

At the risk of damaging whatever cred I have as a hard-ass writer, I have to admit I can't listen to that song. It turns me into a sobbing wreck every single time.

If he had sung it as a young man, it wouldn't have been nearly as effective.

I love Johnny Cash and this late video. He was an amazing artist. I also recommend his autobiography JOHNNY CASH (with Patrick Carr) (1997).

I also admire the movie "Freaks" although it is difficult to watch. Edward G. Robinson visited MGM during the filming and was considering signing a contract with the studio but he became sick to his stomach seeing the Freaks performers in the commissary.

The thing to remember about "Freaks"is that the "freaks" generally regarded themselves as performers and stars. And in the sideshow, carnival world, they were valued attractions and stars.

I find any type of carnival life difficult to watch. And this is, of course, the most poignant.
Thanks for recommendation!

Patti,
The music doesn't load into my computer - I have a blank box. But I'm really curious which song you are talking about?

What a fantastic song. And I've started to watch FREAKS a few times now, most recently the other night. If you go to the movie's entry on Wikipedia, it has links that will take you to bios for each of the performers. Some of them had very fulfilling lives; others had very, very sad ones.

Oh, thanks, Laurie. Just like the actors in OUR GANG probably. Show folks don't always have it so good.

Thanks for posting this. Reminds me of Katherine Dunn's GEEK LOVE, an excellent book.

Carnivals, of course, are excellent October subjects, but any month is a good month to be reminded of our common humanity.

Now that was an original book, Richard. Thanks for reminding me.
