Things That Are Making Me Happy

 Florida
A book I will talk about later called THE CIRCUMSTANTIAL MAN by Gary Reilly
That our condo is better than expected
That Phil survived an escalator mishap I have been dreading all my life.
And what about you?

Very glad you're enjoying Florida!

We enjoyed 60 degree weather for a couple of days. Then the snow and cold returned.

Classes start tomorrow at the College--and I'm not standing in front of one of them! Retirement is sweet!

I managed to read a book every day last week.

I'm happy that you and Phil are in Florida. The state will be a little saner while you are here.

Mark ran the two-bridge half marathon Saturday morning in below freezing weather and high gusts. The run started in Pensacola, ran over the three-mile bridge that spans the bay, went through the city of Gulf Breeze to the toll bridge over the Santa Rosa Sound, and ended up by the Gulf of Mexico in Pensacola Beach. They were running into the wind and gusts kept blowing Mark off the track. He came in five minutes below his best time and still managed to place second in his age group. His parents had asked him three separate times if he had a hat, both the night before and the day of, and he said, "I don't need a hat." After the race he said, "I should have worn a hat."

Watched the first season of FORTITUDE and am watching the second season now. Great show about murder in a small town on the Arctic Circle and has a slight TWIN PEAKS vibe.

It's warming up!

I finished LIEUT. GULLIVAR JONES last night. As I said when I posted it as my FFB on Friday, I was only half-way through the book. Although it had a few interesting parts, it was not a good book. It may have been meant as a satire, but there was really nothing before it to satirize, and a satire is usually understood to be a satire and this book left me with a great, big "Huh?" Anyway, I'm happy I had the fortitude to finish it.

Enjoy your week, Patti.

Yes, it's good down here. Tell us about the escalator mishap, which, as Bill or Deb would say, would be a good name for a rock band. Glad Phil is OK.

Other things: saw THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI last week and enjoyed it. Love Frances McDormand. Tomorrow is STAR WARS.

Getting to eat at favorite restaurants we don't have in New York.

The weather, despite some rain last week. 83 and humid was a little much, but mostly it's been cooler and nice.

Several downloaded library books.

I watched the first season of FORTITUDE a couple months ago and also enjoyed it.

Finished THE INDIAN DETECTIVE yesterday and enjoyed it quite a bit. Only four episodes and quite light hearted. I was completely unfamiliar with the lead actor who is a standup comic, Russell Peters.

Today's snow is very light and fluffy and easy to clear off.

Some friends of ours have begun a small brewery and their first beer release party is this Saturday at a local bar.

I'm hoping to drive to Illinois to visit my parents and give my brother a break.

We didn't like the second season of FORTITUDE. THE INDIAN DETECTIVE is on our list for when we get home.

Good time to be in Florida. It's about 20 with light snow here. I didn't like the second season of Fortitude either. Saw I, Tonya which I liked a lot. Just read the new James Lee Burke, Robiceaux and just started The Bomb Maker a new book by Thomas Perry. Also been reading some Gerald Seymour, a much overlooked writer in the U.S.

I enjoy Gerald Seymour's novels. He's written some good ones even if he does stick to a formula.

I forgot to mention I have been listening to Karl Marlantes's MATTERHORN which has been an excellent story with a masterful narration. I been wanting to watch Ken Burns's VIETNAM and knowing that Marlantes is one of the interviewees makes me even more interested.

I am happy that I got down to the MLK march in Santa Cruz today, which was well-attended. I was really happy that the new, white police chief had contacted the head of our local branch of the NAACP to co-partner with, and I was also happy that the woman who is leading it talked about trust, but also said, "Know this, we will speak truth to power." I think there was an idealistic, aspirational tone to all this, but as the police chief said, if we stop here, feeling good about ourselves, we fail. He said, "Go out and talk to one person who is different from you, and listen to them." I wasn't sure if I would find a way to do this assignment, but right as I was leaving the speeches, I walked by a guy I assume was homeless, sitting on a planter. Because I glanced at him in a friendly way, he asked, "Hey, can you tell me what's going on today?" I smiled and said, "It's the Martin Luther King day celebration. He smiled and said, "Oh, cool." I liked that.
